Melanie Smith is a Yoga Alliance registered RYT-500. Melanie has quickly begun to travel the world sharing her passion for the practice of yoga on land and on the water. Her fun loving classes are a spiritual journey with one part breathe work, one part alignment, another part humor; then mixed with an eclectic soundtrack, and sprinkled with a handful of LOVE.

Melanie launched her current yoga business under the moniker “Miss Melanie Yoga LLC” which includes her teachings in the studio, as well as launching her Stand Up Paddle Board Business, hosting SUP Yoga classes, retreats and retail sales of GLIDE SUP boards. She fell in love with Stand Up Paddle Boarding during a trip St. John USVI which led to her to becoming a certified SUP Yoga teacher. The practice of yoga has inspired Melanie to continually step out of her comfort zone, challenging the ideas of what life and work should look like.  Her purpose in practice is not perfecting every yoga pose but creating a lifetime journey in which yoga enhances everyday life, making dreams a reality.

What do you love about Glide boards?
Everything! They are so durable as a fleet board that they can take a beating from being used so much and barely show any wear or tear after two seasons I don’t need to replace any of my boards because of how well they are holding up.  The deck pads are comfortable on my feet, after several classes or a long distance paddle the microfiber of the deck pad just feels good on my feets. Did I mention how pretty the deck pads are?  The design every year so just so outstanding.  I get lots of complements on the look but it’s the performance of the board that matters.  People always want to compare this for that, and I hear a lot people say that they were able to perform poses with more ease and confidence because of the stability of the GLIDE Lotus than on other boards that they’ve tried.  This helps to bring people back to my classes because of there comfort and confidence in not only my teaching by the GLIDE boards themselves.  I really love that GLIDE is an American made board, which provides jobs and helps to reduce the carbon footprint of each board that is made.  GLIDE has really got it down as a board manufacturer.

Favorite Pose(s) for SUP Yoga?
I love arm balances so when I get to work on them on the board I have so much fun with them:
Bakasana (Crow Pose) & it’s revolved variation
Eka Pada Koudinyasana (Pose of the Sage)
Vasisthasana (Side Plank) I love Vasisthasana because you make so many fun variations and preperation poses on the boards that it’s good for any level sup yoga practitioner

Best advice for beginner SUP Yoga:
FALL IN!! I say that with so much love.  Get in the water right away so that you don’t find yourself holding back in poses out of fear of falling in.  The first time you fall in, you might be nervous about how you will get back on your board, be patient and trust your strength. I see a change of people’s practices once that fear of falling in has diminished, they aren’t afraid to try poses or fall in again which ultimately leads to being more present in the moment and having more fun in your SUP Yoga session.

Fave post-paddle eats?
Nearby the lake where I host a lot of classes, there is place called Moo Burger its a farm to table old school burger joint that has THE best veggie burger I’ve ever eaten.  The burgers come with a special sauce called Moo Goo and you can dip your fries in it.  They have a milk shake called the Salty Dog which is a must as well.  Sorry it’s not a super healthy suggestion but after 90 minutes of paddling and practice in the sun and on the water, it’s well deserved.
If you could meet any person dead or alive who would it be?
Joni Mitchell…I love music so much.  It’s an important part of my family and my youth.  I would love to talk with her about her experiences as a lady musician in the 60’s and 70’s.  She’s not only a musician but a poet and a painter, she is inspires me in her way of living, her style, and her grace.
